Servers / Data Protection / High Availability Solutions

Providing & Protecting Your Business Information

Providing access to your data in a timely and efficient manner to your end users is a given in today's fast paced & demanding business environment. Protecting this data from a Disaster Recovery situation is often not given as high priority, “we're doing something about that tomorrow“ or “in the next budget“. Many businesses do not even know how long their systems would be down should an unforeseen situation arise where their System's Server are out of action. We outline below some backup strategies a business can implement:

Data Protection / Disaster Recovery Planning - Basic

  1. Backup Device - Tape Drive* - DAT, DLT, SDLT, LTO1, LTO2.
  2. Backup Software - CA Brightstor Arcserve or Veritas BackupExec Solutions.
  3. Backup Strategy - How Far back do you wish to go to restore archived data? = Number of Tapes required.
  4. Off Site Storage of Backup Media.
  5. Backup Solution Monitored/Audited regularly.
  6. Disaster Recovery Testing on a scheduled basis.

Data Protection / Disaster Recovery Planning - Basic

  1. Backup Device - Remote Tape Drive with Autoloader if required - DAT, DLT, SDLT, LTO1, LTO2.
  2. Backup Software - CA Brightstor Arcserve or Veritas BackupExec Solutions.
  3. Backup Strategy - Dual System to Tape/Removable Media & to NAS Device for improved data recovery speed.
  4. Off Site Storage of Backup Tape/Removable Media.
  5. Backup Solution Monitored/Audited regularly.
  6. Disaster Recovery Testing on a scheduled basis.

Data Protection / Disaster Recovery Planning - Advanced

  1. Backup Device - Remote Tape Drive with Autoloader if required - DAT, DLT, SDLT, LTO1, LTO2.
  2. High Availability Solutions - CA or Legato for Server Mirroring**.
  3. Backup Software - CA Brightstor Arcserve or Veritas BackupExec Solutions
  4. Backup Strategy - Dual System to Tape/Removable Media & to High Speed Device for improved data recovery speed. High Availability Software Mirrors 'Live' Servers to a Redundant Server(s) designated for Disaster Recovery use.
  5. Off Site Storage of Backup Tape/Removable Media.
  6. Backup Solution Monitored/Audited regularly.
  7. Disaster Recovery Testing on a scheduled basis.

* Ideally your Tape/Storage Device Capacity should exceed the capacity of your Server(s). An Automated Storage Library system would otherwise have to be considered as these can be loaded with multiple tapes to cover large system backups.

** Certain High Availability Solutions offer the ability to Mirror multiple servers to a single redundant designated server. The High Availability Solutions mentioned here also can support Clustered Server Environments for premium business system protection. Note: The Redundant Server can be in a remote location; this is subject to certain perquisites as well as the High Availability Solution version opted for.
